WATCHED BY Marina budhosMarina Budhos’s extraordinary and timely novel examines what it’s like to grow up under surveillance, something many Americans experience and most Muslim Americans know.
Naeem is far from the “model teen.” Moving fast in his immigrant neighborhood in Queens is the only way he can outrun the eyes of his hardworking Bangladeshi parents and their gossipy neighbors. Even worse, they’re not the only ones watching. Cameras on poles. Mosques infiltrated. Everyone knows: Be careful what you say and who you say it to. Anyone might be a watcher. Naeem thinks he can charm his way through anything, until his mistakes catch up with him and the cops offer a dark deal. Naeem sees a way to be a hero—a protector—like the guys in his brother’s comic books. Yet what is a hero? What is a traitor? And where does Naeem belong? Acclaimed author Marina Budhos delivers a riveting story that’s as vivid and involving as today’s headlines. (GoodReads) |
About my classroom
Rigor I want to see you what you've got. My class requires contextual thought, not the regurgitation (that means vomiting) of information. Genuine effort and growth is how I measure success. You will be provided with opportunities to learn skills and habits that will take you far in your future education as well as in life in general, do not take that for granted.

RESPECTI do NOT tolerate ANY sort of derogatory language or hateful speech/action. You are not only in school to acquire content knowledge and skills, but also to grow as human beings. This means that we are considerate, that we are well-thought-out in our decisions, and that we contribute to the success and wellbeing of the community around us. Other avenues of respect are that we hear our classmates out when they are expressing something, that we assist those who need guidance, and that we do not disrupt the learning of others.

happinessAn environment most conductive to learning is one that is enjoyable. For this reason, I prefer to allow students as much agency as they can responsibly handle. Open-ended classroom rules do NOT mean that I have low expectations. Quite the opposite, actually. Stay involved, put in effort, and be honest with me when we need more or less of a challenge. I strive to plan lessons that are interesting and stimulating, but those require that students can handle it.

About ME
Past stuffThis may be a surprise coming from a teacher but... I love school! I am freshly gradated from Westminster College with my Masters Degree in Teaching, which I went straight into after my Bachelors in English and Associates in Biotechnology. I couldn't even wait until I was 18 to get into higher education so I ended up with my first college degree before I graduated high school! During this time I worked in animal rescue & caretaking, as well at an electric motor shop. Fun combo, I know!

interestsI REALLY like dogs. I like cats, too, but I REALLY like dogs. Show me pictures of your pets to get on my good side. :)

hobbiesLike all English teachers, I love to read and write! My favorite authors are from the Beat Generation, which you'll learn a lot about in high school! I also love to do little crafts like macramé, cross stitch, and I REALLY love to make paper snowflakes. I am exceptionally mediocre at playing guitar (don't worry, I won't sing any educational songs about the three pillars of rhetoric). Cooking is my favorite downtime. I was born and raised in Utah, so of course I love to hike!
